Kachina Lodge

Less flashy than its next door neighbor, El Tovar, Kachina Lodge offers many of the same types of amenities as its popular counterpart but without the crowds. Each room is furnished with a television and private bath and the facility is modern. Half of the rooms offer partial Canyon views, so if you are interested in booking a room with a view, be sure to express that when you make your reservations.

This property does not have a restaurant or lobby on site. Guests often meander over to Bright Angel Lodge for dinner and other dining opportunities are available within a reasonable distance. Both a lobby and upscale restaurant can found next door at the historic El Tovar, and if you are the type that prefers peace and quiet, you may appreciate the lack of foot traffic and commotion at this hotel.

Guests have the option of booking rooms with two queen beds or one king. Kachina Lodge also has two rooms specifically designated for those with physical limitations.

The Scoop

With bigger rooms and more amenities than some historic lodges, opting for Kachina Lodge still gives proximity to the park, views they traveled all the way here for, along with a little modern comfort. Remember, you are paying for the convenience of staying on the South Rim in all its beauty so be prepared to spend a little more (same goes for any of these hotels on the South Rim).

Parking woes and cleanliness are sighted as occasional problems. It is very possible to park elsewhere and take the shuttle traveling to multiple points of the park as a convenient solution. In fact, there is a stop right in front of the hotel. Some patrons have even said renting bicycles a day or two was a fun and useful way to get around.  As far as the cleanliness issue is concerned, once alerted, the staff should rectify any cleaning issues a busy season can sometimes create.

Because this hotel does not have a lobby, check in takes place next door at El Tovar.

Who is it good for?

This property is ideally suited for families not only for its room size and floor plans but for its proximity to the Canyon (can’t beat walking out the door and stepping onto the grounds).
