Let’s face it. The crowds at the popular South Rim of the Grand Canyon can be quite horrendous, so if that is a big turn off to you and you are willing to go out of your way, the North Rim will not disappoint. It has all of the spectacular views of the South Rim and is much more quiet and serene. It also offers a “road less traveled” feel to your Grand Canyon experience. Just be aware, it sees a lot of snow and cold weather in the winter time, so it is closed during the winter months.
Wildlife viewing is in its prime along the North Rim as Kaibab Mule Deer are known to traipse through campgrounds and in between the cabins at the North Rim Lodge. Bison can be seen grazing along the road and chipmunks can be seen skittering along the trunks of the tall pine trees.
If you plan on using the North Rim to hike down to the bottom of the canyon, the North Kaibab trail will lead you right to the river. This trail is particularly wonderful for viewing the geological layers of the canyon up close.
The North Rim is home to a few conveniences such as a campground with camping facilities and a general store. It is also home to the only lodging found inside the park at the North Rim – the North Rim Lodge.
Outside the Rim’s perimeter is Jacob’s Lake, a small community about a 45 minute drive away. This is a great town to stay in as it is relatively close to the Canyon (and not as much traffic getting there as it would from the nearby communities of the South Rim) and it is close to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park
