Things to do at the South Rim

There is no lack of activities to be found at the South Rim. From here you can book any kind of tour that might trip your fancy. Air tours, mule tours, coach tours, rafting tours, hiking tours, you name it, you got it. And if you’re a go-it-alone type of traveler, you won’t be disappointed with the numbers of trailheads originating here and ranging in difficulty to suit all abilities.

Visitors to the South Rim needing a moment of rest or wanting an education can find an Imax movie at the National Geographic Center where you can also talk to a naturalist, book hiking and rafting tours and learn in greater depth about the ecology, biology and geology surrounding you.

If history is your thing, think about hiking out to some of the historical sites. The Grand Canyon had its very own architect, Mary Coulter, who is credited with defining the style and development of many historical Grand Canyon Buildings. Ancient Indian sights of many tribes are also accessible from the South Rim and some are even active archeological digs.

Grand Canyon Village itself houses a number of historic buildings including a railroad station and museum. There is plenty of souvenir shopping available here and a restaurant or two should you need a nosh. It’s one of the most visited places at the Grand Canyon as it also has stunning views and is readily accessible by motor vehicles.
